Here's to you on this Labor Day! According to the US Department of Labor the first Labor Day parade in 1882 almost didn't happen.  As the story goes union members were ready to parade down Broadway in lower Manhattan but WHAAAT no band???  Yes they said there'd be a parade but nobody brought a band.  Well the crowd protested and were just about to give up the idea of a parade when the local Jewelers Union arrived on the scene with a band & saved the day.  (I guess we know who the smart ones were in the 1880's.)  Well thank goodness the parade finally got started with a proper band leading the way.  Laborers joined the march as the parade wound down lower Manhattan, ultimately growing to 20,000 revelers.  (Although based on this photo, nobody looks to be very happy...)  The parade was a near bust, but thanks to the Jewelers it became a success for labor.  Of course the parade ended with, you guessed it, beer!

What does the story of the first Labor Day parade have to do with inert coatings?  Nothing!  But what else should I talk about on Labor Day?
