SilcoTek at SVC TechCon: Advancing Vacuum Coating Technology

Written by Kayla DeSoto | May 06 2024

On May 7th and 8th, SilcoTek's Luke Patterson and Nik Snyder will be attending the Society of Vacuum Coaters (SVC) TechCon tradeshow at the Hilton Chicago Hotel in Chicago, IL.

Regarding TechCon, the SVC serves as a non-profit, global organization dedicated to advancing coating and surface finishing through vacuum processes. Its membership base, comprising industry, academia, and national research laboratories, includes coating companies, materials suppliers, process designers, and equipment manufacturers. These stakeholders apply coatings and treatments across diverse consumer and industrial products worldwide. The SVC hosts the esteemed "TechCon" annually, a dynamic six-day event featuring tutorials, technical presentations, industrial workshops, networking opportunities, and an international trade exhibition. Renowned for its educational excellence, the program sets industry standards, offering over 50 in-person tutorials and nearly two dozen streaming on-demand subjects. SVC events provide speakers and attendees with unparalleled exposure to a vast international audience within the thin film coating and surface engineering communities.

Why Will SilcoTek be There?

SilcoTek Corporation is the leading global provider of custom coating services using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technology. We hold over 200 patents for coating applications and silicon-based materials that are relied upon by leading companies in semiconductor manufacturing, medical and diagnostic instrumentation, analytical chemistry, energy, and other high technology industries. SilcoTek is a full service coating services provider with precision cleaning, citric passivation, custom engineering, and cleanroom packaging capabilities in-house to maximize our value to customers.

Our high purity coatings are known to reduce system contamination, eliminate ion contamination, reduce moisture effects, and reduce vacuum pump down time in vacuum applications. We offer a batch non-line of sight deposition process to effectively and efficiently coat the part's entire surface. In addition to our standard coatings, we can work with you to determine which is best for your specific application.

Low Outgassing

In Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) systems, it is incredibly important to avoid contamination and moisture. Figure 1 below displays the remarkable improvement gained using Silcolloy-treated parts in a UHV assembly, in comparison to heat-cleaned parts. The Silcolloy coated part showed a 14-fold lower outgassing rate than the heat-cleaned part after 10 hours under vacuum at 61 °C.

Decrease System Pump Down Time

Silcolloy 2000 and Dursan coatings work well in vacuum applications due to their many advantages. They will both allow for faster pump down time with no need to clean. They also eliminate bake out of components as they are received from the manufacturer. Due to the nature of the coating, these systems are able to achieve a lower base pressure with smaller pumps. Coated systems in general increase process cycle time in comparison to uncoated systems.

Reduced Metal Contamination

Process contamination from metals can be a concern for many vacuum processes. Several of these processes can be improved through the use of SilcoTek barrier coatings. By creating a barrier between the vacuum environment and metal surfaces, unwanted interactions can be eliminated and cleaner processes can be achieved. Because most vacuum environments have specific requirements, the metal interaction can vary, but eliminating that potential can only lead to better results.

There are a wide range of applications that SilcoTek coatings can be used for. The ultimate benefit is the superior performance that allows for better analytical results, extended equipment lifetime, reduced labor and capital cost, improved efficiency, optimized material selection and overall increased yield. See how we can help in your application!
