Minamata And The Importance of Accurate Mercury Testing

October 10 2013 Process Analytical

Why is accurate mercury testing important?  Just look to history and the signing of the UN treaty to control mercury in Minamata Japan.  Over 50 years ago, Japan experienced that country's worst incident of industrial poisoning.  Mercury left unchecked and untested was released into the environment and caused wide spread poisoning of the food chain.  Resulting in over 2000 deaths.  (read more in Phys.org).

What does mercury pollution have to do with SilcoTek coatings?  SilcoTek coatings prevent adsorption and reaction of mercury with sampling and testing equipment like CEMMS analyzers; allowing accurate sampling of mercury, and enabling scientists and engineers to identify sources of mercury pollution.

SilcoNert® 2000 (Pink Line) demonstrates exceptional stability over 50 days.  Uncoated stainless steel adsorbs 85% of the mercury sample over the same period; enabling precise mercury sampling and storage.

SilcoNert reduces mercury loss by 90%

SilcoNert 2000 improves performance in:

  • Coal fired power plants
  • Natural gas sampling
  • Flare sampling
  • Refining
  • Chemical process
