Passivation is important because sulfur is highly reactive to many surfaces commonly used in sample transfer and analysis including:
  • Stainless steel
  • Nickel
  • Glass
  • Quartz
The impact of an inert surface is demonstrated by comparing separation of H2S (hydrogen sulfide) and CH4S (methymercaptan). 

Sulfur liner comparison

The top chromatogram shows no resolution of reactive sulfur compounds like H2S and mercaptans when using a stainless steel liner.
A SilcoNert® 2000 (Siltek®/Sulfinert®) treated liner allow sulfur transfer without reacting with the sample transfer or analytical surface.  Sulfurs elute with high response improving sampling reliability.
