Dursan Gets A Makeover And Inert Coatings Never Looked Better

SilcoTek® R&D gave Dursan® a makeover. A tweak here, a process tuck there and now Dursan is the belle of the ball!  Well as far as an inert coating can be a belle and I'm not sure there's a ball for coatings, but if there were, Dursan would certainly be sitting at the head of table.

Continual improvement is a deliberate and measured dedication to improving processes and products.  In the case of Dursan, SilcoTek R&D has refined the process with impressive results.

First off, the coating composition is unchanged.  The silicon, oxygen and carbon composition are the same and the coating bond to the surface is still robust.

Dursan_Auger_plotAuger surface profile (above) shows the Dursan silicon, oxygen and carbon interface with stainless steel.  Surface diffusion occurs at approximately 3300 to 3600 angstroms.

So how much improvement in surface inertness and corrosion resistance can there be if the material composition is the same?  The short answer is lots.

Inertness

How does order of magnitude level improvement in H2S sensitivity sound?

The H2S recovery graph above shows the original Dursan (purple) recovery at 1 part-per-million (ppm).  Recovery is good for rough field characterization, but ppm sensitivity is not suited for ultra low level sulfur analysis.  Now check the Dursan version 2 (V2) plots.  Notice the curves are much flatter showing less sulfur adsorption. The kicker is the V2 Dursan recovery was tested at 20 part-per-billion (ppb); 3 orders of magnitude improvement!

Corrosion Resistance

A 100x improvement over untreated stainless steel!

ASTM G31 immersion tests show Dursan now resists corrosive attack from hydrochloric acid by about 100x.

Sulfuric acid resistance is significantly improved.  Allowing refiners to sample in severely corrosive environments.

Bleach corrosion resistance is also dramatically improved.  Giving chemical process engineers a robust corrosion solution for pump components, sample transfer components, sample cylinders and analyzer system components.
