Email headerCustomers often ask "What are the properties of your coatings and what are the benefits?"  In this blog post we'll do a quick overview of coating properties and benefits.

What are the Properties and Benefits of SilcoTek Coatings?

In this blog post you will learn:

  • Learn about CVD coatings, the benefits of SilcoTek's silicon CVD coatings for various applications.
  • Review general properties of SilcoTek coatings.
  • Link to various coating specifications and uses.

SilcoTek coatings benefit users in many applications.  Discussing in detail all the various coating properties and benefits could take... well... an entire website.  In this blog post we'll discuss key properties and benefits for major coating applications.  Then we'll link to more detailed information so you can take a deep dive into our coatings.

Before we start, there's another way to learn about our coatings.  That's by using our product selector to help you match the best coating for your application.  When a coating is selected, you'll get all the product information you'll need to understand how the coating will perform in your application.  Just click on the product selector button below to start the coating selection process.

Now onto our coating properties.  Let's start with corrosion resistance:

Corrosion Resistance

The primary benefit is:

SilcoTek® Corrosion Resistant Coatings Improve Product Reliability and Reduce Cost

SilcoTek corrosion resistant barrier coatings prevent flow path surface interaction with corrosives; extending component life while preventing product contamination.  Our corrosion resistant coatings, Silcolloy®Dursox® and Dursan®, are particularly useful for fighting corrosion in high purity or otherwise sensitive processes in semiconductor, pharmaceutical, research, and complex chemistry applications.  In addition to extending the usable life of precision stainless steel parts, SilcoTek coatings even prevent nano-scale corrosive reactions that can cause metal ion leaching and contamination, ultimately increasing process yield and reducing failure rates.

Coating benefits include:

      • Reduce system maintenance
      • Improve rust prevention
      • Improve process yield
      • Prevent contamination and particulate generation
      • Improve oxidation resistance

Chemical Inertness and Non-Reactive Surface

The primary benefit is:

Improve Test Reliability and Quality

SilcoTek® offers CVD coating solutions to make your analytical and sampling systems perform better.  Our chemically inert coatings improve test accuracy and reliability by preventing chemical reactions between the sample and flow path surface. Get the right coating solution for your process and products.

SilcoTek's CVD silicon coating process bonds inert, non-reactive coatings, like Dursan® and SilcoNert® to the surface.

The chemically inert coatings prevent interaction of the sample with the reactive flow path surface.

Non-Stick Anti-Fouling

The primary benefit is:

SilcoTek® Non Stick Coatings Improve Productivity and Product Quality in Extrusion and Mold Release Applications

SilcoTek coatings can improve efficiency and prevent damage to molds or extruders, while solving common material problems like corrosion and mold release.  Outgassing, moisture acidity, and abrasive wear take their toll on mold quality and result in costly replacement or repair. SilcoTek® coatings, like Dursan®, reduce friction and stiction while improving moisture and corrosion resistance. SilcoTek coatings bond to process surfaces and act as a non stick, hydrophobic barrier that improves surface performance.

Coating features and benefits include:

  • Low surface energy, high contact angle surface
  • Better wear resistance for higher durability, and erosion prevention.
  • Higher lubricity to improve operation of moving cores and slides and improved resin flow for reduced energy cost and wear.
  • Takes the Place of release chemicals
  • Prevent contamination by release chemicals and oxidation by-products in medical and electronic applications.
  • Change in our luminescent release agent rainbow finish signals a loss of coating.  Visual inspection of the surface signals coating loss without precision measurement.
  • Does not transfer onto the plastic part during molding.
  • Eliminate Diamond finish release problems by improving surface lubricity.
  • Improved corrosion resistance of extruder and mold components.

Non-Wetting Hydrophobicity Surfaces

The primary Benefit is:

SilcoTek® Non-Wetting Coatings Prevent Moisture Contamination and Improve Analytical Performance in Laboratory and Process Applications

SilcoTek's inert high temperature barrier coatings enhance hydrophobic interaction between critical flow path surfaces and your product.  Dursan® coating improves moisture repelling properties of stainless steel, glass, and ceramic surfaces by 60% or more, minimizing wetted surface effects.

Coating critical flow path surfaces help process engineers and analysts manage moisture and improve results.  Comparative studies show SilcoTek® coated flow paths adsorb and retain significantly less water than an uncoated stainless steel surface.

Coating features and benefits include:

  • Prevent product contamination
  • Eliminate moisture adsorption, improved hydrophobicity
  • Improve system corrosion resistance
  • Reduce purge and calibration time
  • Eliminate instrument burn-in
